Petabit capacity
Today, the capacity for a single fiber pair is 64 wavelengths of 800G = 51.2T. In the terabit era, capacity can be managed with wavelengths as the unit of measurement.
In the petabit era of Scale Across, 1000x more capacity is needed (1 Pb = 1000 Tb).
The unit of measurement needs to shift from wavelengths to fiber rails/pairs.
- 20 rails = 1 Pb (1,280 wavelengths of 800G)
- 100 rails = 5 Pb (6,400 wavelengths of 800G)
Transmission capacity and distance is maximized by utilizing C Band and L Band low-loss wavelength ranges.
The limiting constraint for DCI is optimizing transport capacity in scarce fiber. The limiting constraint for scale across is maximizing transport over many fiber pairs.
